2018 Domaine de Villaine, Mercurey Rouge ‘Les Montots’
2018 Domaine de Villaine, Mercurey Rouge ‘Les Montots’
Size: 750ml
Grape: Pinot Noir
Producer: Pierre de Benoist, Aubert’s nephew, currently directs the Domaine de Villaine. Founder Aubert de Villaine has been co-director of the prestigious Domaine de la Romanée-Conti since the mid-1960s.
Region: The de Villaines farm three appellations within Burgundy, specifically in the Côte Chalonaise, namely Bouzeron (Aligoté), Rully (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) and Mercurey (Pinot Noir).
In the cellar: Vinified in wooden vats for 18 days and then aged in barrels of first to fifth use. A real, rich Mercurey, which opens little by little with age.
Farming method: Certified organic. Les Montots is a lieu-dit with stepped hillsides, exposed to the south, and planted with a selection of Pinot Noir from Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Tasting notes: Looking for DRC winemaking on a budget? This Burg is the one! Ripe notes of cassis and strawberry fields with underlying mushroom and earthy flavors. Pair with grilled meats or simply drink on its own. Age worthy or drink (quite happily) right now! As one critic says of the 2018 Mercurey Les Montots, “I say you can book this wine into the record book of fine, perfect tannins!”
