Yippee-Ki-Yay Christmas Wines:
NV Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve
Who: Henry & Kaye Laithwaite
What: 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, and 20% Pinot Meunier
Where: Marlow, England
How: This was made with the Traditional Method of sparking which includes 4 months in stainless steel and neutral barrels. 20% of this wine is pulled from reserves (previous vintages).
Farming Method: Organic
Fun Fact: These vineyards are located on flint and gravel soil where about 450,000 years ago
the Thames flowed through! This makes the Laithwaite’s vineyards an ideal spot to grow grapes.
Tasting Notes: Mineral driven and edgy with notes of lemon and berries.
2016 Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon
Who: Julian Fayard
What: Cabernet Sauvignon
Where: Napa Valley, California
How: 3-4 week warm maceration with conservative pigeage. Malolactic fermentation after pressing and then 18-24 months in oak barrel.
Farming Method: Fruit is sourced from different vineyards in Napa including Oakville, Rutherford, Coombsville, Yountville, Pritchard Hill and St. Helena with their respective vineyard managers.
Fun Fact: Julian is originally from Provence and worked as a winemaker in Bordeaux for Lafite Rothschild before moving to California. Also! Le Pich gets its name from a Wappo Indian term meaning “golden eagle.”
Tasting Notes: Deep and rich with notes of blueberries, blackberries and cedar. Drink now or age for 5 years.
2016 Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Spatlese ‘Urgluck’
Who: Brothers Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach
What: Riesling
Where: Mosel, Germany
How: Spontaneous fermentation in a 1,200 oak liter cask
Farming Method: Organic
Fun Fact: Ürziger Würzgarten is a vineyard situated on an extremely steep slope in the Mosel and the volcanic and slate soil is a bright candied red in color. The color comes from the high amounts of iron in the soil.
What It Tastes Like: Spicy and sleek with notes of guava and pineapple.
2012 Dominio IV The Imagination Series ‘Scorched Earth’
Who: Patrick Reuter and Leigh Bartholomew
What: A blend of Grenache and Syrah
Where: Columbia Valley, Oregon
How: Aged in oak barrel.
Farming Method: Biodynamic
Fun Fact: On their Imagination Series labels Leigh and Patrick put a visual tasting experience to help guide drinkers through what you’re tasting. The label features different shapes that represent characteristics in wine like acidity and fruit.
Tasting Notes: Rich and bold with notes of cassis, plum and cherries.
