Holiday Wine Tasting:
2016 Benvenuti Anno Domini Teran
Who: Livo Benvenuti alongside his sons Albert and Nikolas.
What: Teran
Where: Istria, Croatia (Northern Croatia)
How: These grapes were macerated for 20 days before undergoing aging in oak for 24 months.
Farming Method: Organic
Fun Fact: Livo’s Father, Peter Benvenuti, first planted vines in 1946. These vines are still producing grapes for his family today!
Tasting Notes: Round tannins with notes of boysenberry and black currants.
2017 Finca Abril Alhambra Single Vineyard
Who: Gustavo and Maria Laura
What: A blend of Malbec, Merlot, and Caberet Sauvignon
Where: Mendoza, Argentina
How: These grapes were harvested by hand and aged for a year in French oak barrels.
Farming Method: Organic
Fun Fact: This winery was started in the mid-90’s but some of its vineyards date back to 1922!
Tasting Notes: Smooth and full-bodied with plum, raspberries, and earthy notes.
2017 Domaine Tortochot Morey St. Denis
Who: Chantal Tortochot
What: Pinot Noir
Where: Burgundy, France
How: Chantal and her team went through the picked grapes two separate time to find only the ripest and fullest bunches; these selected grapes went through a cold soak fermentation in stainless steel before undergoing aging for 15-18 months in barrel.
Farming Method: Organic
Fun Fact: When Chantal took over the winery in 1996 she began the important process of converting to organic farming.
Tasting Notes: Elegant notes of rose petals, mushrooms, and cherries.
2018 Bodegas Marc Isart ‘La Maldición’ Tinto de Valdilecha
Who: Marc Isart
What: Tempranillo and Malvar
Where: Vinos de Madrid, Spain
How: These grapes were hand harvested and fermented on their skins for 50 days before its aged in used French oak barrels.
Farming Method: Biodynamic
Fun Fact: La Maldición means ‘The Curse’ - this winery is given that eerie name because this property is so secluded and therefore a pain/a curse for workers to reach!
Tasting Notes: Bumping acidity with notes of cloves and strawberries.
NV Moillard Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé
Who: Vincent Sauvestre
What: Pinot Noir and Gamay
Where: Burgundy, France
How: This was made in the Traditional Method aka the Champagne Method!
Farming Method: Leaning organic
Fun Fact: Moillard was originally owned by the Moillard family who decided to become wine merchants when a railway near their home in Nuits-Saint Georges was built and they realized they could create wine for a larger audience!
Tasting Notes: Dry and bright with friendly notes of strawberries and raspberries.
NV Moillard Crémant de Bourgogne
Who: Vincent Sauvestre
What: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
Where: Burgundy, France
How: This was also made in the Traditional Method.
Farming Method: Leaning organic
Fun Fact: The first documented vineyard in Burgundy is from Meursault in first century AD!!
Tasting Notes: Mineral driven with notes of Granny Smith apples.
