On Saturday, Karen is joining us from The Wine Trust to open wines from Ginny Povall (winemaker at Botanica and Big Flower), David and Nadia Sadie, and Morgenster. What do these three estates all have in common? South Africa! Hailing from Stellenbosch and Swartland, these South African wines are not to be missed. Come learn more about South African wines and enjoy the following complimentary line-up.

Botanica Chenin Blanc, Western Cape (2015)

Who: Ginny Povall

What: Chenin Blanc

Where: Western Cape, South Africa

How: This Chenin Blanc is aged in French oak barrels.

Farming Method: Organic

Fun Fact: Ginny grew up in Boston, MA!

What It Tastes Like: Nice acidity with notes of white blossoms and peach.


Morgenster Rosé (2018)

Who: Giulio Bertrand

What: Sangiovese

Where: Stellenbosch, South Africa

How: Brief time on skins and then ready to drink now!

Farming Method: Organic practices

Fun Fact: One of the most prestigious wine auctions in the world, called the Nederburg Auction, is held in Paarl every year in September. 

What It Tastes Like: Fresh with lively acidity and notes of raspberries.


David & Nadia Sadie, Pinotage Swartland (2017)

Who: David and Nadia Sadie

What: Pinotage

Where: Swartland, South Africa

How: Aged for 12 months in foudres

Farming Method: Organic practices

Fun Fact: South Africa is one of the only wine regions that straddles two oceans-the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the Indian Ocean on the right.

What It Tastes Like: This is the ruler of all Pinotage’s; with a body like velvet and notes of smoke and pomegranates.  


Morgenster, Estate Red (2010)

Who: Giulio Bertrand

What: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot

Where:  Stellenbosch, South Africa

How: This blend spends 18 months in French oak.

Farming Method: Organic Practices

Fun Fact: The current owner, Giulio, hails from Piedmont, Italy.

What It Tastes Like: Smooth and lush with notes of black currants and rapsberries.


Big Flower, Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch (2015)

Who: Ginny Povall

What: Cabernet Sauvignon

Where: Stellenbosch, South Africa

How: The grapes went through malolactic fermentation and were aged in barrel.

Farming Method: Organic

Fun Fact: Looming above the city of Cape Town is a massive table for giants-well, kind of. There’s a 3,563 foot high mountain called Table Mountain because the top of the mountain isn’t peaked but completely flat!

What It Tastes Like: Woodsy, herbaceous, with a sunny disposition and notes of plums.
