2016 Tinc Set ‘Mas Candi’ (Catalonia, Spain) | In 2006, biodynamic winemakers, and husband/wife team, Ramón Jané and Mercé Cuscó, as well as their best friend/oenologist, Toni Carbó, defied 500 years of family tradition by choosing to vinify and bottle their own grapes instead of selling them off too larger Cava producers. The result is spectacular! This blend of Xarel-lo and Parellada grew where in calcareous clay soil where the soil is purposefully not tilled. The grapes were manually harvested and then fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. This Cava is as crisp as a chilly October night with fresh notes of citrus and grapefruit.
2016 Domaine Glinavos ‘Paleokerisio’ (Epirus, Greece) | Domaine Glinavos was established in 1978 by Lefteris Glinavos, one of Greece’s first oenologists. This semi-sparkling is bottled in an adorable 500ml bottle with a cap crown; it pays homage to the traditional semi-sparkling wine of Ioannina. The wine is a blend from the white grape variety Debina with the addition of the red variety Vlahiko. The color of cantaloupe, aromas of kumquats, and the taste of olives and citrus. Tannins are full, bubbles are like multi-colored pop-rocks candy. The perfect pairing to this orange wine? A loaded hotdog or gummy worms!!
2017 Ricardo Santos ‘Sémillon’ (Mendoza, Argentina) | This Sémillon is the color of freshly fallen amber leaves. It’s the wine-child of Ricardo Santos, a former architect turned winemaker, who runs this organic winery alongside his sons Patricio and Pedro. This unoaked white is fresh, nutty, grassy, and floral.
2016 Winzer Krems Sandgrube 13 Zweigelt (Niederösterreich, Austria) | This Zweigelt is delicious enough to prove to triskaidekaphobia’s (people who are terrified of the number 13) that 13 it actually their secretlucky number! After being grown on clay and loess soil these grapes are handpicked and are fermented in stainless steel. This Zweigelt is a mouthful of tart and zippy raspberries.
2014 Zeller Schwarze Katz (Mosel, Germany) | Don’t let this bottle cross your path on a stormy Halloween night! Zeller Schwarze Katz translates too ‘the black cat from Zell’ and refers to the local legend of the winemaking town of Zell. Hundreds of years ago a black cat guarded one barrel of wine in a full cellar (the only wine from Zell) and so the locals determined that the barrel was special! Zell wineries continue to see black cats as good omens and frequently put this feline on their wine labels. This Riesling and Müller-Thurgau blend is as sweet as a purring kitten. Notes of honey and peach. Pair with cheeeeeeeeeeese.
