Kivelstadt Cellars is one of our new favorite wineries featured at The Cheese Shop of Salem. Jordan Kivelstadt, founder and winemaker, works diligently with organic practices and creates unique, uncomplicated wines that challenge the preconceived notions of ‘California Style.’ Kivelstadt is helping pave a new, distinct, less aggressive, more effortless California style that we see in other California wineries that we admire so much like Donkey & Goat, Birichino, Broc Cellars, Les Lunes, Matthiason, Scribe, Habit Wine, the list goes on! These wineries are using more ‘natural’ approaches to their winemaking – they let the earth and terroir talk through the wine, and don’t alter bottlings with preservatives or chemicals. Kivelstadt dry farms, hand-picks grapes, uses native yeasts, and likes to experiment with blends like their Marsanne and Roussanne Orange Wine (see picture – this past weekend, a magical, albeit hilly, Block Island bike ride deserved the seaside opening of Kivelstadt Orange Wine). On Saturday from 4-6PM, Karen from The Wine Trust is pouring Kivelstadt’s Orange wine, their ‘Twice Removed’ Rosé, their light-bodied ‘chuggable’ KC Labs Syrah, and their ‘Father’s Watch’ Red Blend (a Rhône blend of Syrah, Carignane, Grenache, and Mourvèdre). Come experience the new California without its bells and whistles – just pure, charming juice.
